Affordability

Affordability in Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek is an incredible place to live. It’s a city with great schools, beautiful parks, thriving local businesses, and strong neighborhoods. Many of us chose Walnut Creek because of the quality of life it offers.

But increasingly, residents are asking an important question: can the next generation afford to stay here?

Affordability is one of the issues I hear about most when talking with residents. Young families, recent graduates, teachers, healthcare workers, and people who grew up here often find it difficult to put down roots in the community they love.

Local government cannot control inflation or the price of groceries. But cities do make decisions that influence the cost of living in meaningful ways.

Housing and the Future of Our Community

Housing is a big part of the affordability conversation.

If the only options available in a community are large single-family homes, many people simply cannot afford to live there. At the same time, residents rightly care about protecting the character of their neighborhoods and the qualities that make Walnut Creek special.

As a member of the Walnut Creek Planning Commission, I spend a lot of time thinking about this balance.

Thoughtful planning means asking the right questions:

  • Where does housing make the most sense?

  • How can we create more options for people at different stages of life?

  • How do we grow responsibly while protecting the character of our neighborhoods?

In many cases, that means focusing housing in areas that make sense—such as near downtown, near transit, and in places where people can walk to jobs, shops, and services.

Affordability Is About More Than Housing

Affordability is not just about home prices. It’s also about the everyday costs residents face.

Transportation, parking, and the ability to live near work all affect a family’s budget and quality of life. The strength of our local economy also matters. When small businesses succeed and jobs are close to where people live, communities become more accessible and more resilient.

Smart local policies can help keep Walnut Creek vibrant and livable while making sure it continues to work for people at different stages of life.

Moving Forward

These challenges do not have simple or overnight solutions. But thoughtful planning and practical decision-making can help ensure that Walnut Creek remains a place where people can grow up, build careers, raise families, and continue to call home.

The goal isn’t just growth. The goal is making sure Walnut Creek continues to work for the people who live here today—and for the generations that follow.

Forward. Together.
